After two very successful seasons, Radley’s U15 Junior Colts 1 (JC1) and Harrow’s U18 1st XV reached the Continental Schools Cup finals.. Their places were well earned with a series of tough, tight encounters in which our Old Caldicotians at both Radley and Harrow excelled. Both teams were crowned national champions: the best U15s and U18s in the country.
On March 12th, Radley faced Northampton School for Boys. Despite conceding an early try, JC1 rallied and scored a succession of two tries, which, with their solid defence ensured a halftime lead of 19-12. In the second half, Radley persevered and sealed the win with a fourth try to secure their first national rugby title. The victory was a team effort, but there is no doubt that Radley were spurred on by OCs Edward Casey, Andrew Coke, James Coke, and Mosese Tuliakiono (Class of 2022).
On March 14th, it was Harrow’s turn. The final, played at Twickenham stadium between the two unbeaten U18 XV’s of Harrow and Kirkham Grammar School, was thrilling by all accounts. Harrow clinched the victory with a score of 29-27 in the last moments of the game. OCs Filip Edstrom (Captain), Oliver Chambers, and Kepu Tuipulotu (Class of 2019) played a pivotal role in securing the victory.
“What is remarkable about this is that four OCs were in the Radley team, and three OCs were in the Harrow team. This isn't reflective glory by any means, but I do think that it says a lot about what we do here at Caldicott. We are proud of our ability to nurture such strong Rugby talent and will continue to do so with boys from all backgrounds through our transformational bursary programme” – Matthew Hutchings, Deputy Head and Head of Sport.
From all at Caldicott, congratulations to Edward, Andrew, James, Mosese, Oliver, Filip, and Kepu, and good luck for your ongoing campaigns!
Thank you to Clare Casey for tipping us off about this story, and it is great to hear about the strength and support of the whole Caldicott community: “Edward said he had so many messages of support from so many ex-Caldicott boys which was lovely to hear, and so many messages from parents of that year group congratulating him. Such an amazing Caldicott community spirit; I feel somewhat blessed in the knowledge that he felt very much supported by so many wonderful old friends & parents.”
Please get in touch if you are an OC or past parent; we always love to hear about OCs’ success in sport and other areas!
